Slot Machine Myth #5 - The higher the denomination, the higher the payout
This myth even sounds pretty true, and it is even based on some loose facts.
When a machine pays out it will pay out on percentages, not coin denominations. What this means is that when a 1c machine will win $3.00 a $1.00 machine will win $300.00. This is definatly a bigger payout, but when you look at it, the percentages are exactly the same. It may seem like a lot more money, but you've also risked a lot more money to get it.
The percentages don't change much when you change coins. A recent study showed the following results:
Coin |
Low |
High |
Nickle |
85.2% |
92.8% |
Quater |
91.1% |
95.2% |
Fifty Cent |
90.1% |
95.4% |
Dollar |
90.0% |
96.5% |
Five Dollar |
91.9% |
97.3% |
Even though this shows that there seems to be around a 5% difference between nickle machines and five-dollar machines in the high end, this differnece realyl isn't going ot show up in huge wins. Playing a nickle machine will last a lot longer, and get more payouts evne if they are smaller. Playing a five-dollar machine will go through yor money a lot faster, and you'll have ot be a lot more lucky to get that special jackpot spin.
